The Vendee
department list tourism amoungst it main industries, every year the population
of the Vendee is increased more than three fold by the influx of visiters, and
though the season is that of mainly the school holidays there are reasonable
numbers from Easter to November.
The vendee was one of the early destinations
for the French with Les Sable D'Olonne attracting visiters from the late 1800's
onwards. Today the Vendee can, in terms of holidaymakers, be split in two, the
Coastal zone and the Bocage.
The Coastal area attracts visiters to its
gentle sloping sandy beaches often with pine forests behind, because the waters
are clean , some of the best blue flag beaches in France are in the Vendee, but
also because of the sunshine. The vendee coast is part of the micro-climate
which produces some 2500 hours of sunshine per year which is equal to the best
the south of France has to offer, it is refered to as the Cote Luminiere or
light coast.
The coastal area is also noted for the production of oysters and
mussels and there are many excellant restaurants that serve up these delicacies
as well as other fish dishes, or you can buy direct and cook them
yourself.
The Atlantic beaches also attracts water sports enthusiast, with
surfing and wind surfing the most popular, though sand yachts and dingy sailing
are also very popular. Every 4 years the Vendee Globe attracts visiters from
around the world, this round the world, single handed race is now one of the
most prestigious races in the yachting calender and both at the start and finish
of the race Les Sable D'Olonne is packed to overflowing, a truly colourful,
spectacular event and one that the Vendee is truly proud of.
The second
Region, "The Bocage" is a clam and peaceful area of small fields, woods and
small lakes, the true France, laid back, easy pace of life and this attracts
visiters who want to relax and unwind and take in all that is good about French
Life. Yet it is surprising how much and what great diversity there is for the
visitor.
Finding good
restaurants is not always easy but here's a site that list all the restaurants
in the Fontenay le Comte area and is expanding to all other areas of the vendee.
Restaurants
Fontenay le Comte there are reviews of some of the restaurants and you
can add your own , plus their resident Gourmand and wine critic "tate" take an
in depth look at some.
