The Pays de
la Loire has 300 km of coastline with long gentle sloping sandy beaches,
picturesque harbours and enchanting bays and coves.
Along much of the
coastline there are pine forest just behind the dunes giving protection to the
fragile sand dunes and giving the area a feeling of gentle relaxed, unhurried
tranquillity. Also behind the dunes there are areas of marshlands. The three
most notible areas are the marshes just north of Les Sable d'Olonne of which
the I'Ile d'Olonne is most famous for both its wildlife and in particular
the migrating birds, and also as a tourist attraction. In total there are 1400
hectares of marshes.
The second area of marshland is in the south of
the Vendee and is known as the Venice
Vert or green Venice. It is very popular area for artist. This wetland is
the largest Marais in the west coast of France and the second largest in
France.
Inland the
Region is dominated by the Loire Valley, from Nantes to the rivers mouth at St.
Nazaire commercial industries dominate where as above Nantes the famous
vineyards of the Loire with their equally famous chateaux form the focus of the
landscape,especially around Saumur.
