The Rhone-Alps borders both Italy and Switzerland. To the north are the regions of Bourgogne (Burgundy) and Franche-Comté,
To the west the region of Auvergne, and to the south Languedoc-Roussillon and Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur.
Within the region no fewer than 8 national parks as well Mont Blanc, Europe’s mountain, Europe’s deepest gorge in the Gorges of Ardeche and three of Frances largest lakes, Lac d'Annecy, Lac du Bourget and Lake Geneva.
This is the second most important region economically, only the Ile de Paris is more important and with two international airports at Lyon and Geneva and a vast network of rail and motorways it can easily claim to be the cross roads of Europe.
Though industry plays a large economic role especially along the Rhone River it is tourism that most people think off when you mention the name.
Water is at the heart of this region whether it is snow or glacier, Lakes Rivers or streams and in combination with the mountains it gives the region one of the most diverse tourist industries in France. There are of course the gentle valleys of the Ardeche, the fields of Lavender and many more varied landscapes to be found in the region.
Sport is very well catered for from skiing in winter to hiking, canoeing,
